It is the magic of this rapid experimental period in the early part of the 20C, an explosion of discovery of what paint can do and how emotive form and colour become unshackled to realism allowing the paint and colour to dominate and elevate the emotional power of paint and colour in their own right at the point of standing alone and divorcing representation.
Swirls of raw impasto brushwork give enough information to read and understand the image. One can feel the blustery wind as it whips up the sea and the lady is forced to lean into the wind clutching her hat as her garment billows behind. The dark green dominates the upright close-cropped composition in a simple central position. What a thrilling and exciting period this was, possibly the most exciting, creative period in art.
