The Serpentine North Gallery is currently hosting “Revelations,” a major retrospective of Judy Chicago, one of the most influential feminist artists of the 20th century. Running from May 23 to September 1, 2024, this exhibition marks Chicago’s largest solo presentation in a London institution, offering a comprehensive look at her six-decade-long career.
Exhibition Highlights
“Revelations” features a wide range of Chicago’s works, including some that have never been publicly displayed before. The exhibition takes its name from an unpublished manuscript that Chicago wrote in the early 1970s, which will be published for the first time in conjunction with the show. This manuscript is a radical retelling of human history from a feminist perspective, aiming to recover the stories of women that have been neglected or erased by society.
Among the standout pieces is “In the Beginning” (1982), a nine-meter-long drawing that reimagines the Genesis creation myth from a female viewpoint. This work exemplifies Chicago’s commitment to challenging patriarchal narratives and exploring themes of birth and creation.
Another highlight is a gallery dedicated to Chicago’s monumental installation “The Dinner Party” (1974-79). This section includes rare sketches and studies that reveal the intricate process behind the iconic work, which celebrates the achievements of historical and mythical women. The installation is complemented by video interviews with participants and contextual discussions with contemporary figures like Roxane Gay and Massimiliano Gioni.
The exhibition also includes an immersive video installation of Chicago’s “Atmospheres” series (1968-74), which features site-specific performances combining colored smokes and fireworks. Visitors can interact with a digital component, the “Rainbow AR” app, allowing them to create their own smoke pieces.
Thematic Organization
“Revelations” is organized thematically, inspired by the chapters of Chicago’s manuscript. Each section delves into different aspects of her work and philosophy, from her early minimalist and abstract pieces to her later explorations of gender, power, and ecology. The exhibition aims to provide a holistic view of Chicago’s evolution as an artist and her unwavering dedication to feminist principles.
Public Engagement
The Serpentine North Gallery has also incorporated various interactive elements to enhance visitor engagement. Audio excerpts from Chicago’s manuscript are available throughout the galleries, and a video recording booth allows visitors to share their reflections on the exhibition.
