In the film, “Pollock”, starring Ed Harris, there is a poignant scene with a stumbling drunk JP crying out, “Fuck Picasso”. I love that part and as an artist myself and a great admirer of Picasso I could feel the frustration and anguish of the dominance and genius of Picasso as one searches for an original voice that is not derivative of Picasso.
I love the dynamic and lyricism of this work and its colour combinations. It clings to or is held back by figuration It is a turning point in his work, we can detect the derivative elements of Picasso but also a glimpse of the Genius of Pollack to come. If this was the pinnacle of his work, JP may still have had a standing in the art world but with his later breakthrough, it secured his rightful recognition and position in the art world.
Later he became trapped again as he struggled with how to further develop and build on his achievements without being derivative of his own work trapped in a dead end, no pun intended. His tragic and timely death and the sad death of Ruth Kligman who also died in the car accident ended his concerns.
