Summary of The Station of the Cross – Third Station
Three of Newman’s fourteen-part series, The Stations of the Cross: Lema Sabachthani, are included in this post (1958-66). Aside from Christ’s cries on the cross, he also wanted to invoke the cry of humanity throughout history.
Newman wanted the blank canvas to be its own hue, so he painted it black, white, and raw.
The picture widens the artist’s usage of the zip, with some appearing straight and others appearing feathery and about to erupt.
Because Newman said he could never plan a picture, the series took eight years to finish “Not all at once, naturally, one after the other.. Every painting was created in a moment of inspiration.”
