Interestingly, even Homer thought this work was unusual and strange. Only the flickering stars and the cresting wave provide any contrast to the otherwise dreary landscape. The sailor’s features are obscured by shadows, reinforcing the impression that he represents all sailors, not just one. Bell that rings out the time is the picture’s main actor, and he is pushed aside by his size and prominence. The slanted surfaces and the looming presence of the sailor increase the sense of close quarters; we are all aboard the rolling ship.
