According to the museum’s website, this was a memorial gift made by an anonymous lady in honour of her late father’s memory.
Since then, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, has owned The Elder Sister as part of its permanent collection (in the “Arts of Europe” section).
In the museum’s collection of paintings, it has become one of the most prominent highlights.
Pictured in the background is a serene rural landscape are two women, one of whom is referred to as “the elder sister” and the other as “the younger brother.”
Paul Bouguereau’s son and daughter Henriette were used as models in this scene. Bouguereau’s academic painting style is evident in the beauty of the girl and the gaze of her eyes, as well as the harmony of the composition and the placement of the children’s legs and arms.
There are 5114 in (130.2 cm) between the painting and the frame, and there are 6712 in (171.5 cm) between the painting and the frame.
The Brooklyn Museum’s permanent collection includes a painting by Bouguereau called The Elder Sister, which was completed in 1864.
