Artwork by Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin
Year Created 1910
Summary of The Dream
Petrov-first Vodkin’s widely recognised piece was The Dream. Ilya Repin and Alexandre Benois were among the Russian painters who reacted strongly to the showing of this work.
Benois and other neoclassical art supporters recognised this picture as a fresh take on the genre. Ilya Repin, on the other side, viewed Petrov-Vodkin as a senile artist incapable of progressing his craft.
Two of Russia’s most famous painters had a furious debate over one of Petrov-paintings, Vodkin’s and it was in part because of this that he rose to recognition so fast with his Bathing a Red Horse two years later.
