Title of Artwork: “The Bra Shop”
Artwork by John Currin
Year Created 1997
Summary of The Bra Shop
This famous painting shows two women shopping for bras in a seemingly everyday way. In a gesture of sisterhood, the redhead assists the blonde in taking an exact measurement.
All About The Bra Shop
Although their breasts are inflated, the duo is trapped in a world that emphasises individual physical assets in twisted proportion to the entire. In order to draw attention away from them, their physical parts are exaggerated.
When we are drawn to the painting’s other features instead of the women’s faces because of their crudeness, we unwittingly participate in sexism.
Regarding this artwork, Currin has stated that she intended to create something that she wouldn’t be concerned with being called sexist because the picture is “so sexist that it’s sort of beyond repair.”
