Summary of St. Margaret
Raphael’s Saint Margaret and the Dragon, painted in 1518, is currently on display at Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum.
The scene depicted in the picture occurs just before the saint is consumed by the monster. She faces her impending death without fear, crucifix in hand. The Louvre also has another variation of the statue where she is holding a palm branch.
David Teniers the Younger published his book Theatrum Pictorium of the art collection of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm in 1659 and again in 1673, but by that time, the image had already gained renown thanks to Teniers’ characterizations of the Archduke’s collection.
