All About Seaport
During the 1920s, Wadsworth created a unique style of painting that matched the common feeling of restlessness and desire for escape following World War I, which occurred from 1914 to 1918.
In 1920, while walking home from a vacation in Newlyn, he made the decision to create a collection of paintings featuring harbour scenes that were reminiscent of Turner’s engravings of The Harbours of England. The next year, he received an inheritance that allowed him to travel overseas. He painted Seaport using drawings he made in France, most likely in La Rochelle. Wadsworth uses a technique called tempera, which needs quick and precise handling. He combines realistic details with a dreamy atmosphere that reminds us of the past.
