Summary of Science and Charity
One of Picasso’s earliest major works is Science and Charity. After completing his studies at the Barcelona School of Fine Arts under the guidance of his father, Jose Ruiz Picasso, Picasso was ready to take on larger and more ambitious compositions as a culmination of his studies. When Science and Charity was exhibited in Madrid in spring 1897, it received an Honorary Mention and a Gold Medal at the Provincial Exhibition in Malaga, which took place later that year. Afterwards, a friend of Picasso’s father, a painter named Joaquin Martinez de la Vega, blessed the young artist with a few drops of champagne and christened him a painter. It was only after Picasso’s uncle saw this incredible accomplishment that he gave him the money to continue his education in Madrid. But despite its success, this would be Picasso’s last great work in the academic style. Instead of following in his father’s footsteps, he set out on his own to find a creative path outside of academia.
