Giorgio Vasari mentions the painting in 1568, stating that it was commissioned by Filippo Strozzi the Elder and given to a member of Cosimo I de’ Medici’s staff by Giovanni Battista Strozzi.
Here, the Greek hero Perseus is depicted slaying the monster that held Andromeda captive. For example, the two turbaned individuals on the left, as well as the sea on the shore, and the amazing musical instruments, are all examples of Piero’s attention to detail in his background.
