Artwork by Giotto
Year Created 1304-1306
Summary of Lamentation (The Mourning of Christ)
Giotto’s departure from Byzantine techniques is beautifully illustrated in this fresco. Traditional Byzantine painting techniques, like dimensional layout and iconography, are combined with his stylized faces to tell an emotional storey about Christ’s crucifixion.
The viewer is drawn into the scene by being invited to experience the Lamentation’s pain and anguish.
The screams of the angels and the sobs of the women are almost audible. He set himself apart from other artists of his time by depicting human emotions on the faces of Christ and his followers in a way that made them seem like real people.
