Summary of Lamentation of Christ
In the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg, Germany, Albrecht Dürer’s Lamentation of Christ, an oil-on-panel painting of the familiar subject of the Lamentation of Christ, is on display.
The piece was created for Karl Holzschuher’s family chapel in Nuremberg’s Sankt Johannis Church. On Jesus’ white shroud, you can see what appears to be an apocriphal Dürer monogram.
All About Lamentation of Christ
Mary Magdalene and Joseph of Arimathea stand behind the body of Jesus, preparing it for burial with their hands. The crown of thorns and the coats of arms of the Holzschuher and Grüber families can be seen below it in miniature proportions.
Two robbers are still hanging from their crosses in the backdrop, while a town with a river is shown in the centre. The sepulchre sits on a hilly rocky cliff to the right.
