Summary of Judith
Judith is Giorgione’s take on the Judith and Holofernes storey, which was once mistakenly attributed to Raphael. After being badly restored in the late 19th century like the Castelfranco Madonna by Giorgione, it is difficult to discern the artist’s original intent. The painting was originally painted on canvas, but it was moved to a panel in 1893 and restored to its former glory in 1967. The surrounding hills and tower in the background were previously hidden by a thick layer of varnish, until it was finally removed during the restoration process in 1971. The Russian Hermitage Museum, which acquired the work in 1772, is now home to the painting.
