All About How to Look at Modern Art
The Greeks, Persian miniatures, and Japanese prints are all part of the tree of modern art, which has roots that go back a long way in history. The roots are made up of Vincent Van Gogh, George Seurat, Paul Cezanne, and Paul Gauguin, the four main people behind Post-Impressionist art.
Subject matter and business as an art patron weigh down the tree. A cartoon inside of the cartoon pokes fun at the debate over representation versus abstraction. Reinhardt made a good point about the avant-garde in the United States by comparing business and art. The public and, more importantly, the patrons were not very fond of abstract art, calling it “degenerate” and “subversive.”
