Title of Artwork: “Hotel Lobby”

Summary of Hotel Lobby
One of Hopper’s most famous works, “Hotel Lobby” demonstrates the artist’s trademark themes of isolation and brevity.
Over the course of his career, Hoppers stayed in a slew of hotels and motels. ‘Hotel Window’ is the other of two works in his inventory that represents a hotel (1955).
All About Hotel Lobby
Apart from that, it’s one of just two works from 1952 in which he depicted estranged couples. In their 60s, Hopper and his wife are assumed to be the elderly couple in the photograph.
Hopper’s film noir influences and Edgar Degas’ complicated compositional style come to mind when thinking of the hotel guests who are said to be “both travelling and suspended in time.”
An uneasy atmosphere is “painstakingly crafted” using harsh light and tight lines in the picture.
It’s possible that Hopper’s love of Broadway theatre, which he regularly observed from the balcony, inspired the painting’s lofty and theatrical perspective.
