Summary of Facebook data center, Prineville, Oregon by Jarik Jongman
In the ‘post-truth’ society, Jarik Jongman uses waiting rooms, data centres, and film sets to explore ideas about reality and human behaviour. ‘Truth’ appears to be a more fluid concept than ever. Furthermore, a paradoxical situation has emerged in which the abundance of available information is merely contributing to our insecurity. In his current work, the artist creates new, fictitious visual spaces using personal memories and associations as well as found imagery from newspapers, magazines, and the internet.
His data centre paintings represent both the incredible progress being made, even the possibility of a form of immortality, in that they resemble religious houses of worship, and the reduction of man to sets of data; marketable, controllable, and ultimately void.
