Summary of Death and Ascension of St. Francis (detail)
A devil has been found in the Giotto’s Death and Ascension of St. Francis fresco at the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi in 2011. For over 700 years, the Satanic picture remained undetected due to its clever concealment in the folds of a cloud and its invisibility from the ground.
Until recently, it was assumed that Andrea Mantegna was the first painter to employ clouds in this way, with a painting of St. Sebastian from 1460, in which a cloud from which a knight on horseback emerges is high in the sky.
Giotto was the first to employ this technique, as we now know. A devilish depiction of a friend or acquaintance may have been painted by the master to retaliate against them.
