Summary of Corpse of Christ
The Italian Baroque painter Annibale Carracci painted The Corpse of Christ somewhere between 1583 and 1585. It is now on display in the Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart, Germany.
Early in his career, Carracci created this work, which is clearly inspired by Andrea Mantegna’s Dead Christ, which the artist may have seen in the Aldobrandini collection. Christ is depicted in a twisted position while lying on the ground, as seen from below. Carracci, in contrast to Mantegna, painted only the body and did not include any mourners at the side.
