Title of Artwork: “Beef”
Artwork by James Ward
Year Created 1815
Summary of Beef
Animal painter James Ward collaborated with publisher Boydell on an unfinished catalogue of British cattle varieties around 1800. At Tate Britain, his Gordale Scar (1812?-1814) depicts a majestic Yorkshire countryside with an impressive white bull standing guard over his ancient domain.
All About Beef
A powerful patriotic message is clearly conveyed in this painting, which was painted during the Napoleonic Wars. Even though it’s a Rembrandtesque artwork of two sides of beef from the same period, it may have the same meanings. In fact, the strong ‘painterly’ character of the work would have been viewed as a uniquely British artistic attribute at the time.
