All About A Fishing Boat in Dieppe Harbour
In addition to Walter Sickert (1862-1942), who painted the town’s structures, and Georges Braque (1904-1980), the Normandy port’s fishing fleet was a major draw for painters (1882-1963).
Dieppe and Varengeville were two places where Georges Braque visited in 1928 and later constructed a house and a modest studio.
Wood might have seen him paint the shoreline and small boat studies. Wood’s friends Ben (1894-1982) and Winifred Nicholson (1893-1981) had stayed at St Ives just a few months previously, and Dieppe would have reminded Wood of that trip.
Boats and fishing settlements became a common theme in his works during his final years when he became enthralled there.
