A Beautiful World is about how Grandma Moses thought the world should be.
“In the past, Moses told an interviewer that he liked pretty things the best. “If you don’t like the picture you paint, why bother? Think really hard until you come up with something really pretty, and then paint it. I like to paint old-time things, like bridges, mills, and hostelries from long ago. There are only a few of these old-time homes left, and they’re going fast. I do them all from memory, and most of them are just daydreams, so to speak.
All About A Beautiful World
So much twentieth-century painting has been hard and pessimistic that some people think Moses’ vision is too simple to be true. In fact, though, there has been a lot of art in history that is easy to understand and optimistic. It’s important to remember that all art is an affirmation of life. It’s an expression of the human spirit, even if it’s downtrodden, as proof that our thoughts and feelings are valuable and sometimes beautiful, even if they aren’t. In the end, this is what Grandma Moses was all about.
