Ai Weiwei to Get His First US Retrospective in a Decade at Seattle Art Museum

In a highly anticipated event, the Seattle Art Museum (SAM) has announced that it will host the first US retrospective of renowned Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei in over a decade. The exhibition, titled “Ai, Rebel: The Art and Activism of Ai Weiwei,” is set to run from March 12 to September 7, 2025. This marks Ai Weiwei’s first solo exhibition in Seattle and promises to be a comprehensive exploration of his influential work.

A Landmark Exhibition

The retrospective will feature over 100 works spanning four decades of Ai Weiwei’s prolific career. Known for his provocative and socially engaged art, Ai Weiwei has tackled issues ranging from human rights and freedom of expression to the refugee crisis. This exhibition will offer a rare opportunity for visitors to engage with a wide array of his sculptures, installations, photographs, and films.

Curated by Foong Ping, the Foster Foundation Curator of Chinese Art at SAM, the exhibition will present a unique perspective on Ai’s artistic evolution. Foong Ping, who primarily works with historical Chinese art, aims to contextualize Ai Weiwei’s contemporary pieces within the broader narrative of Chinese art history. This approach seeks to uncover the enduring themes and patterns in Ai’s work, offering fresh insights into his creative process and ideological influences World-Renowned Artist Ai Weiwei Comes to SAM in 2025 – SAMBlog

Anticipated Impact

The announcement has generated significant excitement within the art community and beyond. José Carlos Diaz, SAM’s Susan Brotman Deputy Director for Art, described the exhibition as a “major moment” for Seattle, emphasizing its potential to draw both local and international visitors. Given Ai Weiwei’s global stature, the museum expects high attendance and has planned an extended run of six months to accommodate the anticipated demand.

Visitor Experience

To enhance accessibility and visitor experience, SAM will implement timed ticketing and offer additional access opportunities for museum members. This includes early reservations and member-exclusive events, ensuring that as many people as possible can engage with Ai Weiwei’s powerful work.

Ai Weiwei’s Global Influence

Ai Weiwei’s influence extends far beyond the art world. His works often serve as poignant critiques of political and social issues, challenging viewers to reflect on contemporary societal conditions. From his iconic installation “Sunflower Seeds” to the powerful “Refugee Life Jacket” series, Ai Weiwei’s art continues to resonate deeply and provoke critical conversations globally.

Conclusion

“Ai, Rebel: The Art and Activism of Ai Weiwei” at the Seattle Art Museum promises to be a landmark exhibition, offering an in-depth look at the works of one of the most influential artists of our time.
