German Female Artist Viburnum Flowers and Cherries

Reading Time: 2 mins read

“Cherries and Viburno” by Clara von Sivers, German (1854-1924) painted, 1890

A beautiful cascade of green foliage, delicate white balls of Viburnum flowers, contrasting with the hanging lush ripe red cherry fruits plucked gathered and spilling out of the tipped-up rustic blue glazed cherry bowl to the ground with a smattering of cherry petals. The highlighted white contrasts with the regressive darker shades of deep blue, especially with the white flower hanging into the bowl partly in shadow.

The luscious ripe cherries, sensual mouthwatering, some plucked and gathered while others are eaten straight from the tree with the potential pleasures and delights to come, perhaps a cherry pie!

The tall thin format accentuates the downward fall and flow of the composition. The lower cherries, with their curving, twisting, and dancing stalks, add a lively dynamic to the flat plane of the ground directed towards us, the viewer.
